February 22, 2017 – Last week, Emma Conklin ’17 presented at the Seattle City Council Meeting of the Civil Rights, Utilities, Economic Development, and Arts Committee. Her Spoken Word, entitled “An Open Letter to the Past and the Future,” describes the difficulties and challenges encountered in 2016 and her hopes for 2017. Emma is a member of Youth Speaks Seattle (YSS), a space where young people share their written and spoken words to build relationships between arts and social justice values. Envisioning art as a tool for social change, youth participants build community and refine their arts and activism skills through writing, poetry, open mics, and leadership opportunities.
