Middle School Combo Competes at Bellevue College Jazz Festival

February 9, 2018 – On February 2, the Middle School Jazz Combo had an outstanding performance at the Bellevue College Jazz Festival. The Combo performed three tunes; “Doxy,” “So What,” and “Blue’n Boogie.” Of special note was Jamie Williams’ solo on “So What” where he quoted Miles Davis’ solo from the original recording, “Kind of Blue.”

After their performance they had a clinic with Professor Chris Bruya from Central Washington University. Professor Bruya highlighted how impressive it was that the group played their set from memory. He was excited to work with kids who are learning this music, in his words, “the right way.”

Later in the day the Combo attended a masterclass with Tim Warfield, world class saxophonist. Mr. Warfield played for the kids and talked about his path to becoming a performer and about what the core of jazz is, communication, and how to work on that in an ensemble.

Congratulations to the Middle School Jazz Combo.
