Mueller Launches New Collection of Poems

October 20, 2017 – Join poet and SAAS science teacher Melinda Mueller, and cellist Lori Goldston, as we celebrate the publication of Mary’s Dust, Melinda’s first full-length collection since her award-winning, What the Ice Gets.  This is the second time SAAS has hosted such an event (last October, Melinda’s book, The After, and concert by Syrinx Effect’s Naomi Siegel and Kate Olson) in our STREAM Commons.

Melinda will read from Mary’s Dust, a collection of thirty poems about historical women named Mary—both famous women, and those nearly lost to the historical record. Lori Goldston will perform a suite of new music commissioned for the book (and included in a digital download available with the book), and we will also be showing a film by Christian Anderson featuring Seattle poets discussing the unique perspectives women writers bring to writing about history and creating their own narratives.

Lori Goldston—who has performed with Nirvana, among many other groups and musicians—is “classically trained and rigorously de-trained… a cellist, composer, improviser, producer, writer and teacher from Seattle. Her voice as a cellist, amplified or acoustic, is full, textured, committed and original.”

Melinda and Lori will be available to sign copies of Mary’s Dust after the reading and concert.

For a sneak preview of Melinda reading from Mary’s Dust, here’s “Annunciation” (filmed by Christian Anderson):

And here is a taste of Goldston’s music commissioned for the book (first recorded at the Chapel Performance Space, Seattle, Washington on February 23, 2017). “Love’s bitter stings/Love’s bitter strings:”
