April 5, 2017 – Earlier this year, we reported on a group of Seattle 6th graders who started an anti-bullying campaign called the D.C. Bully Busters after the 2016 elections. In mid-March, the group (Lilah Amon-Lucas, Emma Beane, Savannah Cockrill, Elise Gundlach, and Sofie Pichler) was invited to Washington, D.C. by Washington State Representative Pramila Jayapal, who held a press conference about the group’s campaign to end bullying in politics.
While they were in D.C., the girls worked in teams, alongside fellow D.C. Bully Busters leadership committee members from five other schools (including Seattle Girls School, University Prep, Hamilton Middle School, Eckstein Middle School, and D.C. Prep), to meet with legislators and their staff to ask them to sign the D.C. Bully Busters pledge, which states: “I will represent the people of the United States without engaging in bullying or being a bystander to bullying tactics.”
The girls also had meetings with many congressional leaders, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (see photo above) and civil rights leader Representative John Lewis of Georgia. They both signed the pledge, as did more than thirty other legislators, including:
- Senator Patty Murray (WA)
- Senator Maria Cantwell (WA)
- Senator Kristen Gillibrand (NY)
- Senator Jon Tester (MT)
- Representative Pramila Jayapal (WA)
- Representative Suzan DelBene (WA)
- Representative Derek Kilmer (WA)
- Representative Steny Hoyer (MD – House Minority Whip)
- Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton
