May 6, 2010 – Cathy Schick, Seattle Academy’s Athletic Director, was recently featured in an online article by momlogic.com, a website dedicated to issues facing mothers. The article, entitled Don’t Be A Jerk on the Sidelines, addresses parenting, athletics, and good sportsmanship.
Here is Cathy’s list of sideline parenting guidelines:
Don’t coach your child from the sidelines; this could be contradictory to what the coach is asking the athlete to do.
Don’t approach or call a coach when you’re are angry. Calm down first.
Don’t bad-mouth the coach, officials, opponents, or other players in front of your child.
Do support your athlete with positive words and actions.
Do encourage your child to self-advocate.
Do familiarize yourself with the sport so that you can stay involved in the game.
Do be a positive role model for your child by practicing good sportsmanship.
