Schimmel ’18 Hosts Alaska Native Youth Round Table Discussion

October 27, 2017 – Sam Schimmel ’18, Center for Native American Youth 2017 Champion for Change, hosted an Alaskan Native Youth round table discussion during the Alaska Federation of Natives Conference held last week in Anchorage, Alaska. Sam brought together Alaska Governor Bill Walker, State Of Alaska Medical Director Jay Butler, Senator Lisa Murkowski, Senator Dan Sullivan, Congressman Don Young, and several other Alaska Leaders to discuss important issues impacting Alaska Native Youth. The attendees spent the morning and part of the afternoon working through challenging topics that impact Alaska Native Youth such as suicide, opioid abuse, cultural connections, education, and climate change.

Sam has also been invited to speak in Washington D.C. with national leaders and policy makers this November to celebrate Native American History Month.

Congratulations to Sam and his family.
